Possible Solutions to California’s Water Crisis

by Waterwal in Issues, November 23, 2009

California is having a water crisis. These are some possible solutions.

1. Desalinization plants. There plants convert seawater into drinkable water. These have advantages because they have a near unlimited source of water. However, they are very expensive to operate, and the brine that is left over from desalinization is very hazardous. Desal water is about 850$ per acre foot as opposed to $250 for groundwater and $350 for recycled water.

2. Rainwater harvesting. We should make use of the limited rain water that California has. Right now much of the rainwater goes to waste. Obviously, the water is not safe for drinking, however the water can be used for things such as watering plants, ect.

3. Recycled water. This is the process in which sewage waste is transformed into usable water. This water is usually not safe the drink, however it can be used to water plants. This process creates methane, a gas that can be sold to energy companies, to lower the overall expenses of operation. A good example is the Irvine Sanitation District
