There are many things that the people of today have to overcome, remnants of the past that modern society hasn’t seen. Prejudicial attitudes were the fuel to those horrors, and that alone has destroyed many societies. Prejudices are the causes of things such as genocide and slavery. It has taken predominance in literature of all kinds, highlighting the atrociousness of the issue. Under all of the horror there is also a show of the bond that can form once the prejudices are lost. Prejudice can destroy people, and with them, an entire society, however, once they overcome that, people can be next to unbreakable.
There are many examples in history where prejudice has gotten out of hand and many people have suffered. Everyone in the modern world has seen or heard of the perverseness of the Holocaust. That tragedy was the cause of one man’s unjust hate of people of Jewish faith, the result of the holocaust brought Germany to its knees. Jews were hauled off to concentration camps like little more then cattle. Over five million people died in these camps, either from gassings, starvation, or exhaustion. The emaciated corpses that were left behind were either burned or buried. No funeral was possible or even allowed to these people. Prejudice combined with a charismatic leader and a desperate nation lead to one of the worst human disasters in history.
There is also slavery to take into account; many people around the world enslaved people of African descent. The most publicized case was in the United States of America where over a million people were enslaved or indentured to white citizens. Many were forced to work on cotton plantations or other such institutions without pay or care, that was where they lived and died without any sense of freedom or education just because of the colour of their skin. Though slavery was outlawed in the 1800s the affects are still being felt today, as there are hate organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan and Black Panthers. Things are not perfect but they are much better than what they were.
