Pro Choice

by Alexander Joseph Perilli in Issues, November 23, 2009

I wrote this to set Pro-Lifers straight.

What does it mean to be pro-choice? Many pro-lifers have twisted it’s definition. From a pro-lifers point of view, people that are pro-choice are some what “the scum of the earth”. According to the average pro-lifer, their opposite celebrates abortion. That is just not true. Being pro-choice means realizing the options available when in the situation of an unplanned pregnancy. Another reason why people might decide abortion is the way to go is because of the insufficient funds they might have to raise a child. And being a member of the pro-choice party myself (if you would like to call it that), I am literally disgusted by people who think the government should be able to restrict the public’s access to the future they “really” want to have.
I like to think that being pro-choice is a fantastic exercise for the sake of freedom of speech. People seem to be so concerned with other people’s lives it is utterly ridiculous. Why should people care if other people are getting abortions? There are many ways to answer that question. One way is to say that pro-lifers feel that pro-choicers are committing murder. Newsflash . . . Not really! I’m sure that many of my pro-choice friends would agree with me when I say that a fetus does have the same rights as a human being (you and I). If I decided to say what I just said to an uneducated person they would probably say “Alex, you are a jerk. You are fiend.”. How would I respond to that? I would say “So are you telling me that a fetus has the right to bear arms? Are you telling me that a fetus is innocent until proven guilty?”. But then again, how could a fetus be guilty. (Sorry. I felt the need for a little comic relief.).
So in conclusion, I would like to point out that everyone’s opinion should be equally respected. I would never disrespect anyone’s political views and/or morals. I just feel that whether one is for abortion or against it, is their own personal business and nobody should try to intervene with what he or she personally believes.

Abortion isn’t nor can it be defined as “freedom of speech”. Voicing an opinion is, but the physical removal of a baby, or fetus as most feel more comfortable calling it when they want to end it’s life, is the physical act that ensues the verbal instruction (speech).

Why is it that one can’t think about insufficient funds and life style BEFORE they get pregnant? Getting pregnant is avoidable.

Now, I am pro choice, but has it’s limitations. I don’t believe a woman whose been raped should have to give birth to her rapists child. I don’t believe children should have children, nor should they be having sex. I believe, for example, a 16 year old who gets pregnant should be able to have an abortion, ONCE. I believe that a 16 year old who gets pregnant for the first time does so due to lack of knowledge, inexperience and likely doesn’t have the tools she needs to prevent it. After getting pregnant and deciding on an abortion, she is responsible to ensure that doesn’t happen again, for her own sanity and for the sake of not using abortion as birth control, like many have/do.

Obviously when giving birth would put the mothers life in danger, she should have the option to abort it.

Drug addicts or alcoholics would be two groups of people I’d encourage to seek other options, rather than bring a child into this world who’d likely be born with many complications, if they even survived, with no parent to really care.

I don’t think pro-choice or pro-life people should be lumped into two categories with specific ” you must believe” ways of thinking.
