Product (RED)

by Alessandra Palmer in Issues, October 19, 2006

If you’ve been looking for a great cause, this is it.

Many of you have probably been to the GAP, your local Best Buy / Future Shop or one of several other sellers of RED products, for those of you who haven’t, or have only seen them briefly, you may be wondering what it’s all about. In a sentence: it’s about AIDS in Africa and is something simple you can do to help.

Maybe you want a t-shirt, or a pair of shoes, a credit card, a watch, a cell phone, or maybe an Ipod. With any of these purchases, you can support Product RED. The Motorola Motorazr is now in red, as is the Ipod, and even Amex.

Cooler still are Gap Product RED t-shirts. Sporting words like Inspi(red), Admi(red) and several others, they are a unique way to make your statement and make your mark on AIDS in Africa .

According to Avert.org, by the end of 2003, there were 15 million AIDS orphans worldwide. A staggering 12 million were in sub-Saharan Africa . Africa is one of the worst hit countries in the world. Even so, there is remarkable stigma surrounding being tested and having HIV/AIDS. For most it comes down to a choice between medication or providing some level of nutrition and shelter to their families. Given the choice, they chose food and shelter, resigning them to a certain death.

As a society, we need to do our part for AIDS at home and abroad.

Do your part. Support Product RED.
