Abortion has been a topic of debate for centuries (if not longer). This article cites some reasons why abortion should remain legal.
The debate as to whether abortion should be legal or not has been a long-standing issue, and it is not going to go away anytime soon. And what about the religious argument? Many religious individuals swear that abortions are an evil act. But are they?
If a woman is raped, and becomes pregnant, shouldn’t she have the right to abort the fetus? Put yourself in her shoes. Would you want to be constantly reminded that you were raped? What’s that you say? It doesn’t matter to you? Well good for you. But not every woman is going to be like you. Some women would look at the child and only remember the pain that they experienced. And they should be allowed to abort the fetus in cases like this. These women will more than likely find a way to have an abortion even if told no, so there’s no point in trying to stop them.
Life or Death Situation for the Mother
What if the mother’s life is at stake? If the mother decides to become pregnant, but it turns out that she’ll die if she has her child then doesn’t she have the right to choose whether or not she should keep the fetus? Or what if having the baby will kill them both, but having an abortion would save the mother’s life? It would be awful not to have any say in that type of situation.
What if it Happened
Let’s say that America goes back to making abortions illegal. What would happen then? Some women with money would travel to other parts of the world where abortions are legal. And other women would simply find someone to perform an abortion for them in the United States. Others, would simply attempt to rid themselves of the child on their own. This creates risk for both the woman and the fetus. The whole argument that legalized abortion increases death is a fallacy.
Whether it’s legal or illegal abortion will more than likely occur at the same rate. It’s just that the individuals who die changes. When legal, it’s mostly the fetus that dies; however, if illegal, then most abortions will be between a mix of the mother and the fetus dying. The mother dies more frequently when abortions are illegal due to her taking greater risks when she tries to rid herself of the unwanted pregnancy. The mother may try to rid herself of the baby on her own, or use an inexperienced physician.
And then some women would just have the baby and try to rid themselves of it after the birth. Most of the time they will just leave it in an ally, or on someones doorstep. And yes, some women would give the child up for adoption. And face it, just because a baby is given up for adoption doesn’t mean that he or she will be adopted. Adoption agencies are already overcrowded as it is.
The God Card
Many religious people seem to think that God (s) is against abortion. The honest answer is that it’s unlikely that anyone really knows how divine entities think (assuming they exist in the first place). You may have your holy book that seems to suggest that such and such is an evil act, but that doesn’t make you right. Meanings change throughout the centuries, and what was once considered nefarious, may now be considered normal. Or vice versa.
A woman should have the right to decide whether or not she wants to keep a child. If women were to lose that right then they might take drastic measures, which would probably cause more harm then good. Just let the mother decide. In the end, legal or illegal, the mother will still be the one to make the choice.
