RED Flag on Hiv/aids in Rural Area
They say that if you want to know how expensive education is, try ignorance.
Lack of education and ignorance in some rural parts of Mombasa has contributed to the spread of HIV/ AIDS among women.
Due to poverty and lack of hospital within the area, some women have turned to be traditional midwives as a way of earning income, and a saving lives of pregnant women wants to give birth as there is no hospitals near that rural area.
Some midwives, who tested HIV positive, explained that they contracted the virus when they were helping mothers to give birth.
“I was shocked when the doctor told me that am HIV/AIDS positive, I thought it’s not treatable disease, I have learned to take life positive and to save other midwives like me who are illiterate, I want to start a campaign to sensitize tradition midwives on the dangers of it as a way of reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS. According to Kenya AIDS Indicator Survey (KAIS) 7.4 percent of Kenyan adults age 15-64 are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In 2007, a research by KAIS indicates that a higher proportion being women between the ages 15-64 (8.7%) than men (5.6%) are infected with HIV.
Women are most affected than in men with 6% compared to 2%.
Nyanza province leads with HIV infections, women being higher than men 15.3 percent, Nairobi is second with 9.0 percent, Coast is third by 7.9 percent
About 7 percent of three quarters of Kenyans living in rural areas between ages 15-64 are infected with HIV. In urban areas, the prevalence is 9 percent.
