Regression of Women

The regression of women’s rights and socialisation.

It is 2010.

Beyond fashion, it could be 1950.

Women, pushing baby carriages at the Mall, looking and acting like their grandmothers,
yet with a rancid sexuality more expected of the 1920s.

Their grandmothers, those who were born in the 30s, who lived through depression and
World War II, who married and filled the role of ‘housewife’, who might have had a jobette,
instead of a career, were probably better off.

Their grandmothers were treated with respect. Their grandmothers were not expected to
be sexually fluent.  The only females who were expected to perform all sorts of sex acts
on command were the ‘bad’ girls men fooled around with to keep the woman they would
marry ‘pure’.

Their Grandmothers, dressed in their girdles and bras,
with their stockings and heels, their faces made up, and the required
strand of pearls, were treated as ‘ladies’.

Yes, a woman’s intellect wasn’t as important as her ability to cook, and their role in the work place was
subsidiary, but they did enjoy and expect a kind of respect.

The 1950s were pretty much the American Template.  The house, the car, the
two or three children, the workadaddy and housemommy, were how the 60s
generation entered consciousness.

This generation recognised the subsidiary position women occupied, and because they
were interested in achievement, not winning First Prize at the Flower Show, or baking a
cake from scratch, but gaining degrees and holding positions of authority, they became active
in Feminism.

Despite the ridicule, the backlash, they did gain many objectives, that is control
of their bodies, the removal of sexual barriers, and assumed their daughters would
enter the world with all battles won.

Remarkably, the regression of women began at virtually the same time, where
the ‘bad girl’ became the template.
