Renewable Energy: A Wise Alternative

The Fuel of the Future.

This year marked a gigantic leap of Negros Province, one of the islands in the Philippines, in boosting the energy supply and resources of the country. Two multi-billion peso projects have been undertaken by the provincial authorities for the construction of major bio-fuel plants over two strategic areas in the province. One, which is about to be operational this year, is in San Carlos City, and the other, has just passed the ground breaking process and considered bigger bio-fuel plant in La Carlota City.

These two endeavors were made possible due to government’s effort, in collaboration with different organizations and financial investors, of finding cheaper and more stable alternative energy supply in the hope of reducing reliance to fossil fuel, which has been dictating the flow of domestic economy.

Energy present in natural floods, wind, water and sunlight is continually replenished as quickly as it is extracted and used up. Common forms of this energy include solar, hydro-energy and biological or popularly known as biomass energy, in which, bio-fuel, is a classic example. These forms of energy are readily available in the Philippines due to its favorable geographical and geological location.

Thus, the decision to venture in this bio-ethanol production is expected to be of great economic impact not only in the province of Negros but to the entire country as well.

The Philippines is quite gifted of possessing major potential sources of renewable energy in varied forms: solar, wind and bio-mass.

Growing consciousness for reduced dependence on fossil fuel had gained its unprecedented height in the country after the Middle East crisis, by which, petroleum industry in the country had deeply suffered.

Rapid industrialization taking place among the developed and developing countries in Europe, Asia and America led to fantastic increase in fuel consumption. Thus, demand outweighing over supply.

It was inundated that huge portion of world’s oil reserves would have been depleted in a very alarming rate, creating a perceived imbalance in supply and demand, in the near future, a condition that would purge the wheels of oil economy in triple rate.

With this scenario, the quest for alternative sources of energy takes popular attention among countries like Philippines to avert future supply problem and aggravated environmental catastrophes, such as what is happening in some parts of the globe.

Scientific studies revealed the feasibility of adopting renewable energy in the future. The studies showed that 50 % of the world’s energy requirements could be satisfied by renewable sources before the middle of the century. However, heightened social awareness and increased political support and interventions are needed to meet sustained level of production.

Certainly, gas and oil production is going to decline as world’s industrial activities outrun its supply of energy.

By 2050, given the present pattern, experts calculate that a major oil crisis is very eminent in the near future. By that time, politics and oil could become effective tools for global dominance.

Obviously, therefore, renewable energy offers the bright answer. For not only that it is clean and environmentally friendly but above else, its supply is infinite.
