Response Recession

About an article on the recession.

This article discusses how while some industries shed jobs others are booming. The less skilled blue-collar workers are losing their jobs in much higher numbers than skilled labourers. Skilled trades such as IT are in great demand worldwide. This is due to concern about efficiency and the pursuit to maximize it. I chose this article because it has in depth information and statistics, on a variety of careers, ranging from IT-related jobs to litigation.

I agree with the author when he said, “The City of Calgary, meanwhile, could benefit from a push by the federal government to fund large infrastructure projects this year to help create jobs in areas such as construction.” I believe that the federal government should be spending a great deal more on infrastructure projects to benefit those who cannot find work or were recently laid off. It is the responsibility of a government to aid all of its citizens in times of crisis. As such increased government stimuli would supply additional money for the consumers and firms of Canada, and assist in ending this economic catastrophe.

The rationale behind this article is very straightforward. We are in the worst economic downturn in seventy years. This article describes how in some sectors there are labour layoffs and hiring freezes. “When you look at last summer, there were more job openings for business analysts in Alberta than for carpenters,” said Frank. But in other sectors shortages of employees are being reported. “Litigation, especially in the bankruptcy, insolvency and restructuring areas are actually busier,” said Kyla. All things being considered this article has an optimistic outlook for this country’s economic future.

This article has taught me about the importance of being a skilled labourer. People who work in low skill jobs are expendable. This is due to the fact almost any person can work these jobs with little training. It seems a good way to get a good secure job is to get at least a bachelor’s degree after high school. A demand always exists for labourers with a degree.
