Driveway Moments: Caring Makes Us Human
The following excerpt is about a cat who walked into a Michigan Correctional Facility. The man being interviewed is Troy Chapman, a man who is in jail for killing a man in a bar fight. When the cat walked into the facility, Troy was the first to approach the cat. He stroked his fur. It was the first time Troy had touched a dog or cat in 20 years. The next day, other prisoners began petting the cat. Men who normally disliked each other gathered together to pet the cat. It was a stray and in bad shape. The prisoners brought it milk and bread. One man even cut out burrs and matted fur of the cat with scissors. The stray cat needed the love, care, shelter, food, and milk Troy and the prisoners provided him. Troy goes on about how people these days criticize prisons because they feel they are not nice enough and they should implement activities to demonstrate care and kindness to one another. Troy does not have an opinion on this but the experience with the stray cat helped him and many inmates realize how good it feels to be needed. Knowing that they saved the cats life and took good care of him gives the prisoners something to be proud of. Troy Chapman has been imprisoned for over 20 years. He is not in denial about what he has done and has admitted he did kill a man in a bar fight. For the past 20 years Troy has been in jail, he has been on good behavior and the warden is considering commuting his sentence. It was bittersweet for Troy when the cat was taken to a shelter because the cat caused an increasing violation of prison code. Usually in prison everyone would be fighting, but the cat gave the prisoners a mission. Even though Troy’s furry friend is gone, he is happy that the cat is in a good home.
