Right to Bear Arms Necessary for Civilian Protection

It is necessary for citizens to know how to defend themselves in tragic events such as Tuscon, Arizona. Gun control is not the answer and neither is enhanced government intervention.

While America has been mourning over the past few weeks due to the grotesque violent act in Ariznoa, much national debate and discussions have been taking place. Every American feels sympathy for the victim’s families and stand behind them, all while wondering what would cause someone to commit such an act of rage. However, there have been multiple parties who are attempting to use this tragedy to score political points, which is not acceptable under any circumstances.

At least for our sake, violence is denounced on a global level.  No government officials or commentators have tried to justify the Tuscon, Arizona shootings. Although, the internet, airwaves, and newspapers are filled with those using this event as a political weapon to fight their adversaries. Within the past few weeks there have been many calls to censor free speech and outlaw criticism of the government. It is ironic that the attempted homicide on the Congresswoman who had just read the 1st Amendment on the House floor would be used to derail our right to free speech. I’m guessing that most would feel safer if the re-instation of the Alien and Seditions Act was pushed.

What is even more troubling and perhaps downright scary, are the multiple calls for stricter gun control laws and for more government intervention in the average citizen’s lives. Any crime committed with a gun has this same reaction. These proposals to outlaw and abolish gun rights around government officials proves that they believe their lives are far more important than the lives of the citizens. Whenever tragedies such as this occurs, brainwashed individuals call for government intervention in our daily lives. Although, more government intervention is not the right call. This impulse is against everything the founders of this great country wanted and eventually leads to the loss of liberty. Government cannot make us safe by mandating security any more than it can make us prosperous by decreeing an end to poverty.

We need to reaffirm the necessary American rights and the value of the responsibility of individuals. Americans should still keep their right to bear arms to defend themselves against these disgusting criminals. It took police over 21 minutes to arrive on the scene of the Arizona shooting, yet advocates of gun control would have us leave our safety only to law enforcement. Since it is not plausible for police to be everywhere all the time, our personal safety dwindles down to our own ability to protect ourselves.
