Save a Bunny Make Your Own Toothpaste
There are many reasons people are making their own toothpaste, one is because of animal testing, other because of the dangers of Fluoride. Learn more about why, and how, to make your own toothpaste.
The other day I was brushing my teeth, a bit of tooth paste somehow flicked into my eye, and it burned. I immediately recalled a picture I had seen of a white bunny her eyes and ears swollen and red. She was a test bunny, one of hundreds, tortured in experiments were toothpaste is put in bunnies eyes on a regular basis to see how long it took them to go blind, get cancer, and so forth.
I realized at that moment how her eyes felt for every second of the day.
photo source - a different bunny than one I had seen pictured earlier.
I did some research and learned that Fluoride ( a main feature in most toothpastes) is actually a poison that many of us get in our water anyhow. As well it is linked to obesity by causing thyroid problems. Fluoride is also linked to causing bone cancer and low IQ’s (fluorosis). Fluoride is a main ingredient in Prozac, and Sarin Nerve Gas.
Did you know the Fluoride was first put into drinking water of prisoners in concentration camps by the Nazi’s specifically to control, and calm, the people in the concentration camps?
Other ingredients in toothpaste also concern some parents, specifically the sugars.
Whether for the bunnies or the health benefits many people actually make their own toothpaste and you can too!
What you Need
Baking Soda
Household Hydrogen Peroxide (3% solution)
Peppermint Oil (or other flavor such as Wintergreen, Vanilla extract or Almond extract)
Glycerine (optional – unscented)
Instructions
Pour ½ cup (110g) of Baking Soda into a mixing bowl.
Add 2 tablespoons (30g) of glycerine – this is an optional sweetener.
Add ¼ cup (55g) of household hydrogen peroxide.
Add a drop of peppermint oil for flavoring.
Mix and store out of the sunlight.
You will want to note that hydrogen peroxide breaks down in the sunlight or with artificial UV, which is why homemade toothpaste must be stored in the dark.
Other flavorings may be used but they should not be acidic ( such as citrus flavorings) as this will react with the baking soda. Also avoid sugars.
You can use water in place of hydrogen peroxide however using Household hydrogen peroxide is safe and will have more of a whitening effect on the teeth.

It’s sad about the bunnies. It’s cruel. I do use hydrogen peroxide it whitens teeth without the cost. There are so many cheimicals in everything. I’ve stopped using so many foods and items. Never considered this one. But will.
I’d love to live a more natural life and grow my own food. That’s been on my mind lately.

Yes, Hydrogen Peroxide breaks-down in the presence of light (sunlight and artificial) which is why hyd.perox. is usually only sold in brown-colored plastic bottles, which filter the light to nearly none.
Glycerin is also an effective moisturizing agent for those whom suffer from ‘dry mouth’ (do not secrete normal amounts of saliva.) At least one off-brand of toothpaste (”TOM’S of MAINE”) include glycerin in their toothpaste.
I usually keep a bottle of glycerin nearby the bathroom cabinet and sometimes wet the toothbrush prior to application of the paste.
I am eager to try this recipe.

After seeing this picture with toothpaste in the bunny’s eye, I wondered who thought this would be a good idea to test on animals. Maybe that scientist should try putting toothpaste in his own eye and see if it causes blindness.
Thanks for sharing how to make your own toothpaste. After reading this, I am definitely going to give the toothpaste recipe a try.

I hate when any animal is used in this matter. I never thought about making my own toothpaste. Have you tried it? I would like to know your opinion. I remember using baking soda and salt as a child to sometimes brush our teeth. It seems to work well.

superb article and i am definately going to follow these tips. i have heard of this test on rabbits. there was a documentary called “rabbits don’t cry” in which “scientists” are injecting shampoo into the rabbits eyes. this was called the LD50 test, but i thought it was now totally banned until i read this. I am a life-member of Animal Aid and National Anti-Vivisection Society and they have confirmed that “They (scientists) keep getting it wrong” and are be-fooling the public to earn extra cash. the reality is that the animal and human anatomies are both biologically different from one another. and in the end of the day, it is the human life that is in danger because all their “scientific” experiments were completley innacurate and wrong. thanks for exposing and sharing, i enjoyed it all.

I think I’ll give it a try with the vanilla extract rather than the peppermint.
That is so unnecessary what they are doing to those poor bunnies. It is appalling.

Poor bunny, do we really need to do this to see what happens, its not like people put toothpaste in their eye and leave it there for hours so why must we be so cruel to bunnies?

Thanks for the info. My daughter has been researching which brands of make up have been tested on animals, and she has switched brands as a result.
I plan to try your recipe. I have sensitive teeth, so I have been brushing with just baking soda for years. I looked in my medicine cabinet and found hydrogen peroxide that expired 7 years ago. I think maybe I should replace it:)
