Selling of Chinese Baby Girls
When I read and watch the news about China’s one-child/two-child policy, who is the victim? A Chinese Baby Girl.
I am appalled at what I watch and read about China either aborting or adapting baby Chinese girls. The funny thing is that the Chinese babies being adopted to white American families are exclusively girls, not boys! It just reflects the gender bias of Chinese society and culture since the dynasty times! Traditonal Chinese culture looks down on the Chinese female: their names usually are not included in issues of inheritance in a family tree book, fathers are looked upon as lacking sexual prowess for failing to make a baby boy, and of course the father’s ego is stained when he cannot pass on his last name to future generations. These things are so vital and important in traditional Chinese society. Personally, it makes me want to vomit! A Chinese girl and a Chinese woman is a unique human being with feelings, hopes, fears, aspirations, and dreams like any other human being on this earth! I simply cannot fathom where traditonal Chinese men, all the way from the dynasty periods hundreds of years back, get the nonsense notion that a Chinese girl and ladies are inferior!
That is why I picture myself as Mulan. She was an exceptionally powerful Chinese woman of her time. She disguised herself as her father to serve the Emperor to fight foreign invaders. Such an act was punishable by death. But Mulan was a unique human being with hopes, aspirations, ambitions, and devotion! She was a true strong person, not an inferior sex object!
So when I keep reading and watching more news of Chinese baby girls being adopted to white American families, I remind myself that the gender bias still lives on strong among tradional Chinese society in mainland China! It disgusts me! Well, at least the only good thing about the adoption is that the Chinese baby girl will be raised to become a unique person equal to boys and men with human rights and dignity! Those Chinese baby girls will actually fare and luck out better than Chinese baby girls remaining with their biological traditional Chinese family back in mainland China.
