Separating Twins
Moral issues are raised over the separation of twins.
Recently two identical twins got back together after years of separation. I do not remember how the process began except the one tried to contact the other after she found she had a twin from records that were withheld.
The doctor involved in the separation was more interested in finding out how they would develop separately then in each other’s company, according to the two women. He also showed no remorse in having separated the twins without their knowledge.
Today the women are back together and enjoy each other’s company but before the reunion they were both filled with the anxiety and dread of having to meet their genetic complement. They could have been spared those negative emotions. They have discovered that even though they were separated for years, they had similar habits and mannerisms.
They wished that they had had a chance to see their own flesh and blood. Did science have the right to intervene and withhold information, which would have lead to their reunification? I think it did. Surely the practices of other doctors, who have or are currently doing the same thing and have gone unnoticed, will raise questions on the right of medical science to be so callous.
