70 million sharks are killed each year for their fins. Most of the time only the fins are cut off, and the remains of the fish (often still alive) is tossed back into the ocean like waste. 99% of the shark is thrown away all for shark fin soup.

The reason for throwing that 99% of the shark (mind you still alive) back into the ocean is because shark meat is low economical value, takes up to much space on the ship or boat, and contains urea which turns to ammonia once the shark dies and will contaminate other fish.

The shark hits the water thinking it’s safe at home again to survive and continue its journey. But only to realize it can’t swim. Now the shark has 3 horrible fates. To suffocate at the bottom of the ocean, the shark needs its fins to swim and pull oxygen from the water. It will sink to the bottom and be eat in alive by other fish and could bleed to death.

It can take up to 15 years for a shark to be mature enough to reproduce. Man is killing these amazing animals before they even have a Chance to keep their species alive. Any shark is taken regardless of age, size, or species. Sharks have lived in our oceans for 400 million years and people invade their home to have some soup. Shark fin itself is tasteless, its just a bulk for the soup. The flavor comes from chicken or other stocks. Many people especially the consumer is unaware of the suffering fining causes.

Now these prehistoric creatures are under severe threat from over fishing. In some parts of the world population has declined by 90% in the past 10 to 30 years. One pound of dried shark fin is worth $300 or more. Its literally a multi-billion dollar industry.

If we continue to murder sharks for their fins sharks will go extinct. If they go extinct fish will grow over populated, eating all oxygen plants in the ocean. Without these plants, how is the ocean suppose to produce oxygen for the planet. so if there is a lack of oxygen what happens to man kind? We are not only effecting Sharks but ourselves too.

The earth is already over polluted because of man kind and now we’re killing off a prehistoric animal for a little soup. A prehistoric animal that makes a huge difference in our world, and sadly i wonder if no one i will realize this until its to late. I know i want my children to see a live shark someday. I don’t want to show them one in a book, magazine, Internet, or by any other resource other then in true life. Sharks are an amazing animal that is so beautiful and really does nothing to humans. On average there are 5 to 10 shark bites a year. Vending machines kill more people then sharks do.

3 sharks are killed every second. Just think how many have been killed in the time its taken you to read this. Though sharks are not the only prehistoric creatures at risk. 300,000 whales are killed each year, 110,000 sea turtles each year, and 100,000,000 fish per year. Do some research of your own if your want to learn more. Help stop shark fining.

Sharks don’t have a voice so lets speak for them! No to shark fining
