Should Same Sex Marriage be Approved
A simple philosophical discussion on whether same sex marriage should be approved.
Should same sex marriage be approved?
While there are many modern opinions that accentuate freedom, including the freedom to have same sex marriage, I shall, in this article, boldly defend against the approval of same sex marriage. Here are 3 simple reasons why:
1) 1. It is against religions that same sex marriage be approved. Take note that, though I may be a Christian, it is not just Christianity that disapprove of same sex marriage (Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13), but on a more objective scale, any known religion does not approve of same sex marriage. A common argument is that: why should individuals be bound by religious virtues if they are not religiously inclined? The answer is simple, the very concept of marriage stems from religious beliefs. It is paradoxical that homosexuals who seek same sex marriage want the approval from the religious people yet at the same time not wanting their subjective views on the subject matter. If religion does not forcefully impose that homosexuals should abide in their teachings, why do homosexuals paradoxically want to encroach and seek a religious concept of marriage?
2) 2. There are of course a category of homosexuals who are not concern of religious approval. But what about legal recognition? Thus far, there is no country in the world that legally approves same sex marriage. The best that homosexuals can find is civil partnership. However, why do homosexuals want the exact same legal recognition? If the emphasis is on legal rights, they are not discriminated in any way whatsoever with the concept of civil partnership. An important point to take note is that rights are never absolute. The reason is because a person’s rights can be in conflict with another. In a more relevant context, if a homosexual couple were to apply for adoption, priorities will be given to couples with a “marriage” status instead of a couple with “civil partnership” status. This may sound rather discriminatory, but remember that rights are not absolute. The right of a child to opt for a family that is deemed normal in the eyes of the society should prevail over the rights of a homosexual to have preference in child adoption.
3) 3. As aforementioned, religious and full legal approval cannot be given to same sex marriage. So what exactly do homosexuals seek for? Social approval? In this modern era, the stigma for homosexuality has been relatively abated. However, that is only for the acceptance for homosexuality. As far as marriage is concern, if homosexuals wish for their relationships to be socially approved as a marriage, they would have to change the society’s perception on the sacred concept of marriage, which in turn would mean that the society will have to change their perception on their religions and spiritual beliefs.
