Should the Motor Industry Set Better Emission Standards?

A few thoughts on car emissions and a few suggestions to reduce them.

The world is going on a crazy spree at present about carbon emissions and climate change; one aspect to change is the type of cars allowed on our road:

1. Sports Cars: If sports cars such as Ferrari and others want to be licensed it should be on race circuits only at weekends.  There is limited oil reserves in the world as we keep hearing on the news, if this is then true we should eradicate things that use up unwanted reserves so we do not have to resort to other kinds of fuels to keep our cars going.

2. Minimum MPG:  Any car that does not do a minimum combined MPG of 30 should be banned from our roads that way we only have economical cars.  This will mean that manufacturers should produce more efficient cars or they loose out on profit.

3. Would it matter if certain businesses go out of business – NO?

4. What is the alternative? We have to realist that nothing will happen overnight but in the next 5 years it should be mandatory to have only economical cars on the road however until that occurs the cars that are lower than a certain amount of MPG should have a whopping tax put on their vehicle.

Two suggestions are as follows:

a) Cars that are lower than 20 MPG have a £1500 road tax and on new cars a one off fee of £500 which goes to local good causes. The more people pay with their wallet the less likely these cars will be on our road but for special occasions which may be costly. Anyone breaching these rules could have their cars confiscated by the authorities.

b) Cars that have a MPG of between 20 – 30 should have a road tax of £1000 and a one off driving fee for new cars of £250. Hit people where it hurts their back pocket.

This adoption is the only way the motor industry and government combined can take a stance on carbon emissions from motor vehicles today to ensure we have adequate supplies for future generations to come.
