Society Never Advances
The latest statastics for murders per year in various countries are frightening. Has the contemporary society really advanced?
Nowadays we find that in several part of the world there is an alarming increase in the juvenile offences. Most of these teenagers become criminals in future. The younger generation today seems to be misguided as they get involved in crimes like rape, assault, drug offence and property crimes. “According to a 2009 nationwide survey the CDC reports that 9.8 percent of high school students report that they have been deliberately physically hurt by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the preceding 12 months.”
One major reason for this increased violence is the mud and filth of immoral living.
The latest statastics for murders per year in various countries include: 55,000 murders in Brazil, 25,000 murders in Columbia, 20,000 murders in South Africa, 15,000 murders in Mexico, 14,000 murders in the United States, 11,000 murders in Venezuela, 8,000 murders in Russia, 6,000 murders in El Salvador, 1,600 murders in Jamaica, 1000 murders in France, 500 murders in Canada, and 200 murders in Chile. In India , the statistics are quite alalmimg as we find an increase in crimes like kidnappings and murders. Murders in India increased from 9,803 in 1953 to 32,481 in 2006. This confirms that the contemporary situation is quite frightening, and we seem to be living in the wasteland of anarchy and violence.
The fact is that the leaders and politicians talk about sanctity of human life, violation of human rights, but in reality they are indifferent to change the contemporary violence. They are more interested in protecting their own selfish interests. No doubt, the world today needs a revolution of love and nonviolence.
Our earth is in need of a movement that reestablishes brotherhood, and peace in the postmodern society. Grace Lee Boggs is quite right as he wisely remarks that in the United States, such movement has started emerging. “I think that the calamity, the quagmire of the Iraq war, the outsourcing of jobs, the drop-out of young people from the education system, the monstrous growth of the prison-industrial complex, the planetary emergency, which we are engulfed at the present moment, is demanding that instead of just complaining about these things, instead of just protesting about these things, we begin to look for, and hope for, another way of living. And I think that– that’s where the movement– I– I see a movement beginning to emerge, ’cause I see hope beginning to trump despair.”
In the last lines, Grace Lee Boggs is quite hopeful that our sorrows will soon be turned into joy and hope. The world bowed down by the nightmare of violence will cling to hope, that a renascence and revival of humanism, brotherhood and nonviolence is not far behind.
