NEW YORK (AP) – The voice of the most feared in every live performance, that of a cell phone.

New York Philharmonic ran last movement of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony on Tuesday night at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center New York. Director Alan Gilbert had to stop the concert until the phone stopped ringing.

The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/xvTkcr) reported that the characteristic tone of “Marimba” from the iPhone, Gilbert looked annoyed, but the phone kept ringing the front row and passed minutes.

Gilbert said the phone was switched off and finally stopped the orchestra until the noise stops.

Philharmonic said it was the first time director impaired performance due to cell phones or other distracting sounds.
