CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN SCHOOLS.

Nowadays there are many talks about  ‘reform in education’ and making school fun. Despite all that the mindset  of people hasn’t  changed much. Some teachers continue to believe that corporal punishment is still the best way to discipline children. Some teachers slap, shout or pinch children. This is not  the correct way to make  children disciplined. Most of the teachers give children physical punishment because of their tantrum, poor marks and disobeying.  All this can have severe effects on children which can ruin a child’s future like school phobia and having low confidence levels. A child who is beaten in class is even scared to ask a simple question. Teachers sometimes beat children because of stress in their own families.

This menace can be rooted out by counselling those teachers who give physical punishment. Instead of these punishments, teachers should talk to children and guide them to move on a right path. These punishments should be banned. I hope my views would have awaken some people

The schools here can use corporal punishment, but only in severe circumstances and they have to have the parents permission. I don’t believe that’s the way they should handle problems though.

    Hi Seema,

I agree with you completely. There is absolutely no need for capital punishment of any kind by teachers. It\’s really the teachers own frustrations that they are venting out on children. It truly is the teachers who need councelling and then allowed to conduct teaching. A really powerful, intense and realistic article that has, thankfully, exposed the true horrors that exist in our supposedly modern and civilised society. Entertaining to read and beautifully scrpted, I loved it all from start to end.

I don’t believe any teachers in the U.S beat students. They would wind up under the jail. Parents are so protective of their children that few parents dicipline their own children. I see so many unruly kids I think they could use some dicipline. I think teachers should have more control over the behavior of students.

Teachers in Canada are not allowed to use any kind of corporal punishment either. However, emotional abuse is harder to control. Verbally berating children is just as damaging as physically beating them.

Teachers are human, and have bad days and say things they shouldn’t. But that is part of teaching by example, making mistakes and then admiting it and apologizing.

It’s a power trip. Teachers shout down or threaten young children, but when they reach the higher classes, teachers start behaving themselves. They know their domination will no longer work and become more friendly with children. Parents should talk to children so that the children confide in them. When teachers become aggressive, parents should intervene.

Disciplining a child by beating them is an indication the the education system or parent is lacking in ability. We were beaten in school by teachers on a regular basis but the teachers who had the greatest impact on my life and my close friends never resorted to the stick.

I had an awful experience with an older mean teacher with my middle daughter. She was so traumatized by the teacher that I lost it with the teacher. My child was crying every night due to this teacher. I feel if a person doesnt have patience or like to work with kids, they should find another job. Like being a guard at a state penitentury. I have no tolerance for this type of behaviour. It is not fair to the kids. thanks for the awakening article.

NIce article. In my country, most teachers who slap/pinch their students come from public schools. I’m not sure exactly the reason for this, except that I think it’s because public school teachers have more students on their hands — the ratio of students to teachers is quite large, so they tend to run out of patience more. Nonetheless, it’s still not enough reason for them to physically hurt their students.

I totally agree that there is no place for violence at school but I think most teachers know that and do try to work with the children. I think the teachers need more support and training to learn about the different learning styles children (and adults) have. I have 4 children and they all learn best in different ways.

Some children are visual, some auditory, some logical and some kinesthetic. If the teachers were trained to spot which the children were they could stop disruptivness before it began.

Seema…this is a very interesting write about a somewhat controversial subject. Society changes have moved the concept of corporal punishment onto the back burner in the last few years…economics have placed a lot of extra pressures on teachers and teacher aides to the point where many jurisdictions have adopted a no fail philosophy and so students are becoming victims of the new educational system. Safe to say that your views have awakened some people…at least the large number of comments would indicate that anyway…Congratulations.

  89. mo hoyal

    On February 13, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Wow, controversial for sure but an interesting read. Some of the teachers I had growing up belonged in sanitoriums-so there is also mind abuse instead of the crack to the knuckle. I’m not kidding-one of my teachers ended up having to get electrical shock treatments!
I did spank mine but didn’t kill them and feel they came up very well. Soon as one talks back, that’s it for me! The kids these days do not have enough discipline and a lot of the teachers we have now need to be replaced… but what do you get when people are not well paid?

I agree that this should not be done by teachers, but when parents are afraid to spank their children, like many have become here in America, you wind up with kids being totally out of control and undisciplined. Adults fear them. Many have beaten, if not killed, their own parents. That is not the way things should be either.

I still remember the teachers who did that in my school, I am glad that now media had helped in bringing this out open.Only problem with most of our schools here is the strength of the students in each class.Once we limit the student per class then i think teachers will be more focused.
Teachers should motivate with their words and actions with each and every student.
