Sparing a Square: The Irony of Our Country in Comparison to Others

Describes the conditions of other countries and our own, and the irony of how we act and the way that they do with these conditions in mind.

Even the poorest of the poor in our country face better conditions than those of third world countries. Here we have programs and soup kitchens. In these countries, few programs exist and the ones that do are too far to travel for some people. Yet, we still complain and do not hesitate to not help the man on the corner or the person we’ve lived next door to for years. And so perhaps the next time we think our outfit makes us look to fat or that it is out-of-season, perhaps we can think of those who do not have the option to complain about their only article of clothing. Or maybe when that neighbor asks for a cup of sugar we won’t be as declined in giving what we have to spare.  I’d like to finish this article with a funny little anecdote from Seinfeld. Elaine was once in a bathroom and the stall she was in didn’t have toilette paper and so she asked the girl in the stall next to her if she could “spare a square”. The lady replied- “No, I cannot spare a square.”Although it was a funny episode, it is a true representation of how we feel we cannot “spare a square” to those in need around the world, as well as here in our own country and our own community.
