Sports

THBT Sports is becoming too commercialized.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and respected adjudicator. Today the motion is – sports is     becoming too commercialized. My point today is that with all these advertisements to do with sports, people will start buying products to do with sports. They won’t be playing sports for fun and enjoyment any more. They are only doing sports to try out their new products that they bought just yesterday or to use them once and hardly ever again.

sometimes they have adds for products that have nothing, absolutely nothing to do with sports. For example, David Beck ham advertising Motorola phones that shave your beard. Or Jacky Chan advertising visa credit cards. And when you get a visa card, you just use it to buy more products. When you start buying these things, you can become obsessed with trying to get the perfect product. And while you are looking for this, you will forget all about your weekly run or the tennis match you planned to play with your friend on the weekend.  As u can see, commercialism can be quite dangerous, if you start buying the things they advertise.

Commercialism also has some other disadvantages, such as broken freindships and relationships in your hurry to get a product before stock runs out, or going broke from buying to much of them. Another one is that, multiple companies spend thousands of millions of dollars making products and creating advertisements, which they pay even more so the can be shown to the world. Not getting enough profit can result in having to fire a few employees, and when it is overdone, the whole company can go down. When multiple companies just happen to do this at the same time, it could result in an economic crises.

Also like Daniel said, we have lots of adds talking about how it is good to use or consume a product during or while watching a game. But where are the adds that say it is good to use them after a match. Sometimes, these advertisements are not focusing on the correct thing.

Even when you are watchin a soccer match on tv, you have lots of advertisements, sponser names all over the pitch. Like daniel said, there are branded balls, ball boys with advertisements all over their shirts, and sometimes even the referees have the adds too. Ladies and gentlemen, sports does not exist to make money, sports should be something to enjoy and to socialize with your friends.

There are also companies that do not have anything to do with sport, but still advertise it. For example, a milk brand will be advertising ” Milk will give you strong bones and therefore help you along in sports.” They also refer to famous sportsmen who use this product. And people who support that sports person will always use that product to help them in sports. But then they won’t do sports anymore. Advertisements can be a trap for these people who enjoy sports. Once you get stuck in these, you can’t get out. This is why this motion must must and will stand.

Thank you.
