Stand by Me Review

The movie ‘Stand by me’ is based on the short story ‘The Body’ written by Stephen King. Stephen King’s quote “I hated school. I don’t trust anybody who looks back on the years 14 to 18 with any enjoyment. If you liked being a teenager, there’s something really wrong with you.” relates to the to the movie ‘Stand by me’ because in the movie, ‘The Cobras’ are fourteen to eighteen year olds and they are portrayed as being the being the bad guys and complete hooligans who get drunk, bully their own younger brothers and put both their own and other people’s lives at risk for the sake of entertainment. The movie depicts Stephen King’s dislike towards teenagers as the good guys in the movie are twelve to thirteen year olds who are not complete teenagers yet. The movie is a hero’s quest to find the body of a kid who had gone missing. During their adventure to find the body of the kid, the main characters discover who they truly are and what they are really capable of doing. Stephen King describes a teenage life as being filled with bullying, violence and misery in his book called “Carrie”, and this is depicted in the movie as the main characters, who are about to become teenagers, getting bullied by the older kids from ‘The Cobras’. Another book that Stephen King wrote called “It”, follows a group of children aged in their pre-teens as they battle an evil demon who manifests in the form of a clown, and this is depicted in the movie by the main character of the movie ‘Gordie’, who has to face up to his bad memories and his dad who hates him. Gordie is constantly told negative things by his dad, the worst being “It should have been you”, which means that Gordie should have died instead of his older brother who died in a jeep accident, but he fights these dreams and memories and follows his own dream which was to become an author and he achieves this in the end.
