Stupidity Vs. Obesity
My opinion on people who sue for being overweight.
For some of us, this lawsuit is old news. For me, I’ve never done a whole lot of research on it because I just rolled my eyes. When I came across a mini-article about it on a random website, I felt I had to discuss it. Apparently, McDonalds was sued for causing obesity. People were reporting cases of eating Big Macs several times a week and, BIG SHOCK, became overweight. Am I the only one that sees that as either a way to get some quick cash from a big chain company, or dare I say it, denial of their own responsibilty?
Internet access is at everybody’s fingertips these days, whether it’s your PC in your home or at your public library. Almost every fast food chain nowadays has nutritional information posted on their website, accessible to the public. The websites are pretty basic- McDonalds.com, BurgerKing.com, even KFC has one. Even without the easy access to nutrition facts, has it ever been thought by anyone with common sense that fast food is in any way healthy?
Shouldn’t there be a responsibility taken by a parent to ensure the health of their own children, instead of pointing a finger at everybody else for your own actions? In 2003, Judge Robert Sweet threw out the case of obese angry customers trying to sue McDonalds for their own eating problem because it was a frivolous lawsuit. He did, however, give the plaintiffs an opportunity to make their argument a bit more compelling by digging deeper and exposing the not so commonly known dangers of McDonalds food and how it’s processed. Two parents came back and sued McDonalds for their children’s obesity, diabetes, heart disease, elevated cholesterol AND high blood pressure. They also explained to the court that an Egg McMuffin for breakfast and a Big Mac Meal for dinner was a regular part of their diet. The father of one of these children actually had the audacity to say he never saw the ingredients posted anywhere, and honestly believed this greasy fast food was a healthy way to feed his child.
It’s amazing to see the lack of responsibility people take for their own actions these days. In lieu of parents being too lazy or too busy to make home cooked meals for their children, they’re angry when their kids are overweight and look to blame anyone else. This is one huge reason why not only our country has the highest obesity rate, but heart disease is also the number one killer. Fast food restaurants are not to blame, people are.

I remember this case I’m on your side. If people can’t control the way they eat they blame it on everyone else. Good article.

Reading about ignorance like this spikes my blood pressure. The lack of personal responsibility people take today grates on my nerves.
Who cares if the ingredients aren’t posted. I’m sure there are one or two signs that you should take the big mac, mega fries and gallon of diet coke out of your mouth long before you begin crushing the scales!
Oh…the ‘Liked It’ is working…
Amen.

Anything I would have wanted to say on the subject, you mentioned. Bravo!

Unfortunately, nobody today wants to take responsibility for their own actions. It’s a sad state of affairs.
