Take the Driving Out of Drinking
Addressing the growing problem of drunk driving.
Tips to Stop Drunk Driving: If you work in the public, such as a restaurant or bar, you share the responsibility to stop someone from driving drunk. Since it could be dangerous to directly intervene you should contact owners of the establishment or your supervisor immediately and explain the problem. If someone appears to be seriously drunk, is alone and has rebuffed all efforts to intervene, i.e. a taxi, a ride home, coffee, sleeping it off, calling a relative or friend – - then authorities should be called.
If you must drink in a public place and you will be the one driving home, why not plan ahead and stop drinking at least two hours before you are to drive? You may also ask someone for coffee, and if necessary explain why you need the coffee. Do not be embarrassed to explain your situation to a bartender or other patron. Tell them you are to drunk to drive. If you do not have the money for a taxi and no one else will arrange for one, call the taxi company anyway and explain your situation. During holidays many cities in the U.S. offer free rides to people who have been drinking – no questions asked.
If you see a vehicle swerving along the road: call police. Make sure you stop along side the road or at a signal before you call. Do not attempt to engage the driver. Note the license number if possible.
If you are going to a party or event where you know you will be drinking a lot, prearrange for a designated driver. Otherwise you should take a taxi or public transportation if available. If this event is important enough maybe you should arrange for overnight accommodations at a nearby hotel.
Learn how to say no thank you to non-stop rounds of drinks. Be responsible, even if it appears uncool. Someone who is trying to get you drunk knowing you will be driving home is the one who is uncool.
If you have children and you have been out drinking and could be too inebriated to drive, take out your wallet and look at the pictures of your children.
Then remember other people have children to.
