Teen Suicide

This article provides information on teen suicide. It contains reasons for suicide, how to detect a potential suicider and, how to prevent teen suicide.

FACT: Suicide is the third leading cause of death in the world after motor vehicle and homicide related deaths. The approximate ages of suicders range from the age of 15 to 24.

FACT: Resaerch has proven the leading causes of teen suicide relates to depression, anxiety, peer pressure, substance abuse, traumatic events, and the availibilty of a weapon.

Detecting a potential suicider

Everyone knows the daily life of a teen, but you never really know the daily life of any individual. Teens face many problems whether its in a house hold, at school, or with friends. Never underestimate any teenage problem as if its just something teens go through. While in middle school, high school, and college the pressure escalades from obtaining good grades, making the right friends, and fitting in. Here are a list of things potential suicidal teens convey:

  • Recent loss: Divorce, death, loss of a job, money problems, loss of interest in friends, hobbies, loss in religious faith etc…
  • Personality Change: When a teen begins to change their personality they may be thinking of suicide such as feeling sad, tired, withdrawn, anxious, or apathetic.
  • Change in eating habits: When a teen begins to eat less or over eat, they may also gain or lose an excessive amount of weight.
  • The Talk of Death: teens may sometimes talk about dying, what it feels like to die, will they be missed if they die, jumping off a cliff, shooting themself, or any other self harms.
  • Sleep Patterns: Sleeping more often, not getting enough sleep, insomnia, or nightmares
  • Sexual Interests:begining to miss their menstural cycle etc…
  • Low Self-Esteem: the feeling of self hatred, unable to trust themselves around other people, doubt, self- ashamed, guilt, depression, or feeling as if they are worth nothing, can never do anything, or will never be anybody.
  • Extras: THE GIVING AWAY VALUABLES, PREVIOUS SUICIDE ATTEMPTS, SPENDING LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY, VISITING OR ASKING ABOUT THEIR WILL, SAYING THINGS WILL NEVER GET BETTER AND NEVER CHANGE, SUBSTANCE ABUSE…

Prevention

Prevention in any suicide is crucial. If you are a person stuck in the position to help a potential suicider here are a few tips to prevent this situation:

  1. be a major support in their life. Help them get through their problems and let them know everything will be ok with time.
  2. Contact a prevention organization
  3. express your love, concern, and support
  4. provide help of over coming the situations being faced
  5. Schedule to meet a doctor dealing with mental instability
  6. Listen carefully to what they have to say
  7. Talk to them about their problems and feelings
  8. Remove all lethal weapons from the household
  9. Ask them if they want to hurt themselves, dont ever be afraid too
  10. Be sympathetic not judjemental

FACTS: In 1995 suicide was the leading cause for black teens between 15-19

    Teen sucicide is on the rise and parents should be on the lookout for these signs of depression. A well written article.

    Their lives was wasted. Well, we need to respect of what they decided and that is they need to end to their lives.
