Tent People: The New Homeless

by tikifire in Issues, February 13, 2009

Tent people are now a fact of life. If you don’t want homeless people in your town, then help change things for the better.

A mother and son left in an old van and headed for the Texas gulf. They bought a tent and supplies. There was no work where she was at so they moved on for a place a little warmer so they could set up a tent..When they reached Texas they found a beach town and set up the tent. They found a spot on the beach. There they met another couple from up north . They too were homeless and trying to find work . This couple were in there early twenty’s. She was seven months pregnant. The mother and son learned about the rules on the beach and about the people who didn’t want anybody camping there. This town was the new play ground for the rich. If you didn’t cause problems you might be able to stay a week or two without having to move. The rules on the beach was no longer than three days. They left there camp and started to look for work. They put in lots of paper work when applying.

They needed an address in order to get a job so they made one up. They had a cell phone so they used that number for the employers to call. Two days later the van broke down and they had to walk everywhere. Finally they both landed work on the far end of town so they moved the tent to a fishing jetty area. They got about a Two blocks away from their new jobs. The job was  going good and the mother was offered a new job on the other side of town for a lot more money so they took off for the beach again. The young couple were still there and hadn’t found any job yet. The mother started work and they seem please with the way she work so they hired her son as well. The hours were long and they had no ideal what was in store for them. They did without, saved their money. The first of many down falls came when their tent was broken into. They stole things that only had meaning to the mother and son. They slice the tent up so the mother and son had to buy another. They took showers on the beach sometimes they even paid to shower. They used the outside toilets and were rained on and flooded a few times. They had to use some money for the laundry Matt

. They never went dirty to work. They had sand everywhere and dreamed of having a place soon. With a real bathroom and a real bed. They hardly slept at night. There were all sort of people scanning to see if there was someone inside the tent. Another time while working their tent was broken into again. There flash lights and radio was taken and the doors and windows were cut again. They had no choice but to buy another tent. One rain downpour left them flooded again. They spent twenty or thirty dollars at the laundry Matt again and that took another chunk of cash. They ate at work it was free. Most people still have to pay for food. Even tho their suffering was wearing them down they reached out and took all the food the  restaurant didn’t want and fed the other tent people on the beach. The group had grown to about eight tents. The police told everyone to move on so they had to go to another area for a few days. When they returned to the beach they tried to keep a low profile. The rich people in that town didn’t care about anybody they just wanted everybody out of there. When it rained they would drive by and laugh.

When everybody was taking showers they would call them names . They would say they are calling the police, just because they consider the beach there’s. The mother and son struggled and finally saved enough to get a motel room that rented by the month. The mother worked the motel cleaning rooms and her restaurant job as well. The other couple on the beach went and got a place at another motel. As for the rest of the tent people , some found work some took to the bottle. But more than 80 percent got jobs and a place. The girl had her baby and it was healthy. Now her and her husband work different jobs to keep their place. The mother still lives in the beach town and has never missed paying her bills. Its still hard for her because cost of living means everything goes for rent and bills. She is making good money now ,in that beach town but im surprise that this experience hasn’t made her heart cold. She stills helps people who need it and now her son had taken off to live with his uncle .She has even lets some homeless stay with her as long as they are working.

t gives everyone a chance to save some money. I asked if she held hard feelings for the police and her reply surprise me, she said  “they did make it hard on me ,but i think they could of acted a little more human and showed a little more heart”. They served the rich and forgot our rights . She also isn’t scared of being homeless anymore. You never know what the future may bring, but i know i can survive . Can a rich man survive being homeless. Gets you thinking . Can you survive if you had nothing but the clothes on your back? No one would help you.You Had no where to go. Can u survive? These are people like you and me. People who have feelings and pride. Why take their pride and smash it when they are down. The simple things in life are worth a lot more when you don’t have anything.Lke a  hot shower a bathroom and a dry place where no one can drive by and chunk something at you.Now what are you going to do to help someone today.
