The Basic Facts About Anthrax

Back in October of 2001, Senator Tom Daschle received a letter at his office containing the anthrax bacteria. This caused the House of Representative’s and six Senate and House buildings to be temporarily shut down. Some news media companies also received similar letters during this time.

Many people still have several questions about Anthrax which hopefully can be answered in this information.

Anthrax bacteria look rod-shaped under a microscope.

Anthrax is a disease which is caused by bacteria that grows in soil. The bacteria often infects cows, sheep and other hoofed animals. The dormant form of the bacteria or the spores are able to survive in the soil for as long as eighty years. The anthrax bacteria is very rare in the United States.

A person can get anthrax in three ways: By inhaling a lot of the spores, by coming in direct contact with spores either through a scratch or cut they have or by consuming contaminated meat.

Anthrax is not contagious as a person must have direct contact with the spores in order to get the disease. Anthrax is treatable through antibiotics such as penicillin and tetracycline. These are very effective in treating anthrax. It can be cured if treated quickly.

The U.S. government used anthrax to scare a lot of people by talking about its possible use as a weapon. What they did not say is that it is extremely complex to create a weaponized form. Iraq was never close to doing that. In fact, the Iraqi government knew it probably could not be done in their country. Only the U.S. and the Russians have ever succeeded.
