The Blame Game

Mass shootings are not usually predictable, but the political fallout always is.

As far as I am concerned, the Libertarian party is the only part to take a responsible look at mass shootings. Everytime one of these tradgedies occurs, the Republicans are quick to blame Hollywood and the music industry, while Democrats blame the guns themselves. While it is true that a small percentage of the population may hear the wrong song and grab an assault rifle and go crazy, we must ask ourselves: What about the millions of people who watch violent movies, listen to violent music, play violent video games, and own more guns than a military base, and don’t go around killing innocent people. We should not punish a majority of people for the mistakes of a minority. The simple fact is liberty should come first, and if that means we have a mass shooting once in awhile, as tragic as that is, it’s also the price you pay for living in a free society. If you want to save millions of lives a year, lower all speed limits in the US to 10 mph. But we don’t do that, now do we? Of course not, we realize there must be a balance in convenience vs. safety, so we allow our speed limits to be higher than that, knowing that it will inevitably result in some deaths. So whether you are left or right, or somewhere in between, surely you can see my points about the price of living in a free society, and of not punishing a vast majority for the mistakes of a minority.
