The Customer is Never Right

Customer service no longer exists. Service with a smile is forgotten, and the rude have inherited the earth.

Does anyone remember service with a smile? I do. It was a long time ago when the consumer mattered, and the workers put aside their personal problems while on the job. I sometimes feel like a punching bag when I buy something. Customer service has become a foreign phrase, a phrase that is only remembered. The two words no longer go together, and the employees do not care. The customer is never right, and the workers are always complacent.

I have a job just like everyone else. My customers are annoying at times, but I never take out my frustration on them. It is my duty not to do so, it is my duty to remain considerate. By doing that I at least illustrate a sense of caring for my fellow man, a sense of comfort in an uncomfortable world. The effort is rarely returned when I venture into the marketplace.

Employees are not unfriendly, but they are down right rude. I will not speculate why they are like this, but I have my opinions. Whether or not it is television or the demoralization of society in general, I do not care. We are all human beings and we deserve respect. We do not deserve to be treated like diseased rodents, or like annoying insects. When I make a purchase, I feel like I am bothering these people. I feel this way because they act accordingly. Is it not their job? Do they not understand this?

I am angry because of this treatment. People are too concerned with “keeping it real.” They need to keep it friendly. I wonder where these people will go in life attached to such demeanors. Will they be successful? Will they run this country one day? These thoughts keep me up at night. The world only gets worse, so it is very possible. Complacency is becoming the norm, and integrity is losing its value.

I choose not to add to this fire. I will remain considerate and friendly. I challenge you all to do the same. The world needs a glimmer of hope, a spark of betterment. It is easy to be rude, and maybe that’s the problem. Workers do not want to work, but they do want to be paid. I fear the future.

Smile at your customers and let them know that you care, or that you care enough about your job to do so. Treat people the way you would like to be treated. Do your job and do it well, and maybe the world can be a better place, if only just a little. Take care of your problems and don’t let them bleed into other people’s lives. Approach life with everyday with a new perspective. It is written that the greatest thing is love, so love one another and be rid of your hate, be rid of your disdain for humanity. You are apart of it too. You make up a small part of a large pie, and if you don’t change the way you act, the whole thing will be eaten away by selfish ruin.

    Amen! Preach it! In the past, I have supervised a 4-H food stand at our county fair and I have always told my daughters to treat the customers better than they would want to be treated. After all, the store or shop or foodstand WANTS to have customers return, don’t they? And that concept is part of the Golden Rule: Treat (love) others as you would want to be treated (loved).

    I have to tell you that on my birthday we went to a nice small restaurant, not a chain or franchise, and the waitstaff was wonderful! We didn’t tell anyone it was my birthday until we were paying the bill, so that fact hadn’t influenced their treatment of us. They were just very attentive to customer needs. Excellent service is out there, but it takes a bit to find it.
