The Death Penalty. Wrong or Right?

Short essay.

Death Penalty

One of the most debated topics dealing with criminals and murderers in the United States is the death penalty. There are a couple dozen people each year killed from the death penalty. The death penalty should continue to be enforced as it is right now.

According to numerous recent studies, for each inmate put to death, there are between 3 and 18 lives saved. Researchers found this by looking each year at the states that enforce the death penalty. The researchers graphed the information and the graph showed that the more criminals put to death, the lower the amount of homicides there were in that particular state. So therefore, the amount of homicides fall as inmate executions rise. This test was also proven to be true in many other states. Another study looked at 3,054 counties that also used the death penalty and the results were the same.

In 2008 there were 37 people put to death by the death penalty. For most of these people, it was not there first conviction. In fact, 2 in 3 of the people had a prior felony conviction and 1 in 12 had a prior homicide conviction. That means that 3 of the people have killed at least 2 people in their past. When using the death penalty, criminals fear because of their own fear of death. Another reason is with today’s technology in forensics, the chance of a person on death row being falsely convicted is very slim. In fact, there is simply no evidence to prove that anyone in the past has been falsely killed due to the death penalty.

In the end, this will always be a debated topic. The death penalty will save more lives than it takes in the long run. The idea of the death penalty has been around for centuries and will never be called to an end. If a person were to purposely take one or many people’s lives, then common sense says that the killer should no longer have rights to his or her own life. The punishment of just sitting in prison for life does not seem severe enough.
