The Effects of Climate Change Within The UK

A list and explanation of the positive and negative effects of climate change, which will be seen within the UK.

Within the United Kingdom global warming could have some advantages, and some disadvantages. The due to the increase in temperature the south of England will become warm enough to grow grapes successfully. The grapes require special temperatures to grow, and with the temperatures that are now available British grape growers can now grow grapes which can be turned into white champagne style wine, which will allow English grape growers to compete with the French growers. This will mean that England will have a new source of income and revenue, which could be especially beneficial during the current economic depression. This would also open up more agricultural jobs leading to a greater stability for the country.

The tourism industry would be boosted because the hot climate would encourage British citizens to stay within the country for holidays, instead of going abroad. The small coastal villages would benefit most, because of the small hotels run by independent people, as a pose to large chain hotels. Because less people would be travelling abroad less people would need to fly, reducing the carbon emitted into the environment. A disadvantage that follows from this however is that the airline industries would suffer, especially the British run airlines such as British Airways and Easy Jet. This would cause losses of jobs, and a loss of money in the Economy.

However the rise in temperature would lead to the little snow there is in Scotland melting. This would mean that people who go to Scotland to participate in winter sports would have to travel to other countries, such as Switzerland, to keep up their hobby. This would lead to more people travelling long distances, therefore emitting more greenhouse gasses into the environment from the planes. There are many species which are native and famous in Scotland such as the black grouse, however if the climate changes the birds will have an altered migration pattern, and may emigrate for good.

The change of temperature would lead to the growing seasons changing allowing British farmers to grow more crops than we can at the moment, therefore decreasing the amount of crops and food we have to import from abroad, and increasing the agricultural industry, and creating more jobs in this sector.

Coastal erosion is a problem even today, but if the sea levels rose even further the devastating processes will be dramatically sped up. Examples of this would be seen on sand dunes located near Liverpool. This would lead to destruction of people’s houses and properties.

Although Climate change may be seen as a dramatic negative, however there are positive effects. On the other hand however I think it is vital that we do our best to minimalise the effects.
