The Homeless and Less Fortunate
The world we live in still has so much to be desired. In this day and age society seems to still forget about those less fortunate.

A few years ago when my kids were younger I took them to Washington DC for a few days. I believed that they should see the Capital city and learn some of the history behind it. As we entered the city there were many homeless people all around. Some sleeping on grates on the streets while others held signs saying will work for food.
My children were devastated to see these poor people and wanted to give then everything they had including their blankets and pillows. My youngest Ethan, at the time 11 wanted to give more then receive.
We had visited the Lincoln Memorial and of course made our way to the gift shop. In the shop Ethan kept begging me for this candy bar that was 5 dollars. I told him no many times but finally I gave in and got the candy for him. He was very happy and very proud of that big candy and put it in his pocket.

Our next stop was going to be the National Zoo and we decided to take the Metro instead of driving. On our way down the stairs into the subway there was a man standing on the stairs asking for money or food or anything. We walked by as most do and all of a sudden I felt a tug on my shirt and looked around and there Ethan stood with his precious candy bar in hand asking me if he could give it to that man. I could feel myself welling up with tears as I told him if he wanted to give his candy to that man he could but he would have to hand it to him. Off he went and handed that man the candy bar he had begged me for. The man was so hungry he ate the candy paper and all.

Proud of my son but finding it hard to believe that in our Capital city in America there were so many souls that had nothing.
There are so many situations I see on a daily basis living in the city that breaks my heart. I realize it is very hard to help everyone, but I know if I was a rich woman much of my riches would go to help those in need.
So many times I see people just pass by and do not help or ask if they can help. I have had hard times in my life and sometimes had a hard time feeding my own children when they were small, but somehow I made it through and my life got better.
In this great big world in which we all share I so wish there was something we could do to help people who need it much more than we do. The Government spends millions a day on war why can’t they spend a bit more on the homeless and the needy?

Don’t you realize we are spending hundreds of billions of dollars annually on welfare? It’s not like our country is not doing anything. And please don’t compare war expense to welfare expense. Unfortunately there are people and countries out there that want to kill us. They do not understand nice quiet conversations about how to get along, they see that as weakness on our part. They only understand war and power. I wish it were different but it’s not.

It is sad that people have to do without while others are well fed with rich homes and so much they do not need. If those who have more than enough shared with those who don’t, we would all do well.

I enjoyed your write up of such a very sad situation. It really is a shame that people have to live without like that. My heart breaks for all of the people who have to suffer that way.

Too many suffer whereas so many have so much. This world is so unfair. Another great article.
