The Longest Hatred

This article recounts the Holocaust or mass murder of over six million Jews by Adolf Hitler during World war II. Said to have rooted in Christianity, it is reputedly the most terrible crime unprecedented in history. Why and how?
Someone must listen to repair the hearts of the victims.

Anti-Semitism: In the 1870s a German journalist, Wilhelm Marr, distinguished the Jews from other races by assigning them undesirable genetically -inherited qualities unique only to Jews. He invented the term “Semite” to reinforce the race-based concept of Judaism, the religion of the Jews. (Originally the term Semite referred to both Arabs and Jews; yet, “anti-Semitism” connotes hatred of Jews only, not of Arabs.).

Jews do not actually comprise a race: they do not possess distinctive genetic features and biological markers that would set them apart from other humans. They are people bound by common faith, tradition, culture, and history. Since Judaism is a religion, a person does not have to inherit it, nor has one have to be born into it in order to be called a Jew. In fact many Jews are converts from another religions.

The Origin of the Jews. The Jews are descendants of northern Semitic people. They claim to be descendants of ancient Hebrews. They trace their origin to their biblical ancestors Abraham and Sarah who lived in Mesopotamia 4,000 years ago. “Israel” (the “Holy Land”) was awarded to the patriarch Jacob whose sons known as the “Twelve Tribes” or “Children of Israel” had lived in Canaan but were driven by famine to Egypt and became slaves, until Moses, great-great grandson of Jacob, led them back to Canaan. Their land is called “holy” by religions that include Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and Bahai ( a religion founded in Iran. Prior to its statehood, Israel had other names: Canaan, Southern Syria, Syria Palestina, Palestine, Kingdom of Jerusalem, and Judea. Israel and the Palestinian territories comprise the bigger part of the Holy Land.

Judaism : Judaism (religion of the Jews) is rooted in the exodus of the Jews from Egyptian slavery and in what tradition takes to be God’s revelation to Moses ( at Mt. Sinai 3,000 years ago) of the Ten Commandments which is found in Jewish Scripture. God and the Israelites are said to have forged a covenant that included ritual laws and ethical rules which make the Jews or Hebrews special as “the chosen people”, hence different from other people on this regard.

Judaism versus Christianity: Although Jesus came to be understood as the founder of Christianity, he did not intend to start a new religion. He was a Jew and was crucified as a Jew. The Christians portrayed the Jews as “Christ’s murderers”, because to them, it was Judas (a Jew) who betrayed Christ. Falsely, Christians accused the Jews of deicide (the murder of a god, thought to be the most heinous of all crimes) ; of displaying peculiar racial features and behavioral traits; of belonging to a strange religion where children were murdered to use their blood in their religious rites; of demanding exorbitant loan interests; of bringing about plagues, etc. Such age-old prejudice which in truth did not begin with the Jews, led to their genocide or mass murder.
