The Release of Gilad Shalit: What It Says About The State of Israel
The release of Gilad Shalit is perhaps the best way to describe Israel as a nation.
On 18th October 2011, we saw the very emotional release of Gilad Shalit. Gilad Shalit was a soldier that was kidnapped by Hamas militants in June 2006. They kept him in captivity for 5 years before releasing him. The Israelis exchanged 1027 Palestinian prisoners kept in various Israeli jails for Gilad Shalit. The exchange deal was brokered by Egypt.
When Shalit was kidnapped, he was 19 years old and he was doing his compulsory military service which every Israeli has to fulfill whenever they turn 18 years old. He was patrolling the Gaza border in a tank with two other Israeli soldiers. Through underground tunnels, Hamas militants infiltrated and killed the two other Israeli soldiers and captured Gilad Shalit.

There was no sign of life from Gilad Shalit for a long time except for a video that was released in 2009 with Gilad Shalit saying that he was alright and urging the Israeli government to take steps to ensure his release. His parents and friends had campaigned endlessly for his release and successive governments had promised that they would get their soldier back home.
