Baby Canada Goose goslings saved.

They have matured and gone south to warmer climes for the winter, but they almost didn’t survive their days as tiny, peeping balls of yellow fluff.

I recently read a neat article written by Sexyhood03 entitled “Breaking News”…three news stories involving animals (baboob, monkeys and a dog) two of the news stories are true and one is fictious and I got think how animal stories are so touching…I think of lillyrose’s accounts with her horse and her dogs and the heart-rending tribute to her Floy “Good-bye My Friend, Good-bye”.

So I thought I would share one of my own…

We have a large number of Canada Geese here in Winnipeg and every spring some people post temporary signs on the streets announcing “Geese Crossing” in hopes that motorists will slow down when encountering the majestic honkers.

I was driving down a busy street one day this spring…I was the first car in a lone line of vehicles (I always like to be head of the pack!!!) and up ahead I spotted about six or seven little yellow balls of fluff scurrying back and forth across the road between the elevated cement curbs. I knew what had happened, but wondered where the adults were…

The baby geese had fallen over the edge of the curb into the street from the grassy boulevard and were too tiny to get back up to the safety of the grass.

I immediately put my emergency flashers on and stopped my car and got out…impeding the flow of traffic. I managed to herd these new born, fluffy, peeping goslings to the side of the road and picked them up and put them in my cowboy hat where they quieted down safe and secure in the nest-like confines of my hat. I carried them a fair distance back from the street to the safety of the boulevard and gently deposited them out of my hat and returned to my car and continued on my way.

There was something special knowing that I had prevented these goslings from becoming smears of the pavement and other motorists recognized it as well as they honked and waved as they drove away as I returned to my car.

Oh, Jimbob! That is such a lovely story. I am so glad you were there to rescue them. Did the other cars realise what you were doing or were they all honking at you?

I’m glad you did that. There are people who would just ignore those helpless animals or worse some will even hit them with their cars.
