The Second Amendment
An essay I did at school about the Second Amendment.
The Bill of Rights is an important document to the United States that was ratified in 1791. It is a part of the American Constitution. The Bill of Rights was made to protect the colonists’ rights. The Bill of Rights is full of many rights that the government cannot deny the citizen’s of the United States. The Bill of Rights contains ten amendment, but others have been added since.
The Second Amendment protects the citizens’ right to keep and bear arms. This right was important to the colonists because they didn’t have that right under Britain’s government and after fighting the Revolutionary War they felt they should have the right to protect themselves. It is still an important right because people still feel they should have the right to protect themselves incase they are robbed or their life is threatened in some way. Though there are many advantages to the Second Amendment, there are also some disadvantages, too.
There are some drawbacks to the Second Amendment. People are killed everyday because some particularly dangerous people have possession of guns. Sometimes, if a person owns a gun, their children may mistake it as a toy and harm themselves, their siblings, or anyone else in the area.
There are a few confusing spots in the Second Amendment. Some people wonder if it means you have the right to own a gun for self-defense or the right to shoot people with machine guns.
I don’t have a strong opinion on the Second Amendment. I think it is a good amendment, but there are some flaws. It is good for people to have the right to protect themselves, but people shouldn’t take advantage of that right and shoot people.
The Second Amendment, along with many other amendments, has drawbacks, as well as many advantages.
