The True Story of Stem Cell Research

My point of view on stem cell research.

Here in Michigan there is a new upcoming proposal in continuing the some of the continuing of stem cell research. The new proposal is proposal 2 considering the topic of stem cell research. All over news and media I have heard not to vote for proposal two. I have yet not seen one commercial containing statistics and what actually is proposal two. People will continue saying “NO” to the second proposal without knowing what it actually is. In the following documentation I will talk about the facts of proposal 2 and its affect on Michigan. Well, to start off I will state the correct copy of proposal two from http://www.macombcountymi.gov/MSUEXTENSION/documents/2008BallotProposalInfo.pdf

The ballot states “Expand use of human embryos for any research permitted under federal law subject to the following limits: the embryos —

are created for fertility treatment purposes;

are not suitable for implantation or are in excess of clinical needs;

would be discarded unless used for research;

were donated by the person seeking fertility treatment.

Provide that stem cells cannot be taken from human embryos more than 14 days after cell division begins. Prohibit any person from selling or purchasing human embryos for stem cell research. Prohibit state and local laws that prevent, restrict or discourage stem cell research, future therapies and cures.”

Many people still don’t agree with this ballot because of ethical reasons. The people should know what the proposal really is and not the lies they hear on television or in the media. The proposal is reworded to the publics’ eyes making the citizens think that stem cells and embryonic research is supposed to be involved in killing babies/fetuses in women’s body and direct cloning and replication of the human body. To me the misleading information is causing people to vote “NO” for proposal 2 causing the ballots to be unfair. The proposal in my point of view can only make Michigan better in terms of medical benefits. I hope the previous information could help you determine what is the benefit of stem cell research , and why proposal two should be passed in Michigan.
