The World Gets Harder: Justice Gets Softer

A personal take on capital punishment.

I have been storing these thoughts for years, now I’m going to express them i know its an old chestnut of a debate but i must let out my views.

In the 1960s Britain abolished capital punishment, the Government at that time felt there was reason enough to ban Hanging.  Please don’t stop reading, my argument is simple the 1960s is now some 40 to 50 years ago, I don’t think anyone will disagree that the world is a very different place in the 21st century.  Teenagers commit murder now, its not uncommon for gangs of youths to beat a man to death for a bottle of wine or a pack of cigarettes!

When i was young I had a reoccurring nightmare that I would be wrongly convicted of murder sentenced to hang and my family and friends could do nothing to save me.  Today the police detectives have many more tools to help solve crimes, advanced finger print checks via Interpol, the most important in my opinion DNA strand testing a 99.8% guarantee of a physical match, CCTV,lie detector tests, my nightmares have stopped.

In Britain an average life sentence is 15 years, with good behaviour the convicted prisoner will be free in 7 to 8 years! his victim can never get his life back, often the victims family suffer and some cannot take the injustice and the family bond is broken.  I am not a blood thirsty or a vindictive person, I would never attend a hanging or any other form of capital punishment.  I am however increasingly angry with the soft sentences handed down by out of touch senile judges.

We must also consider prevention? if by engaging in a mugging or a fist fight a criminal accidentally kills his victim, he then was hanged surely this would play heavy on a criminals mind before he commits these evil acts? .

Often a murderer is released after 7 years with a degree in his chosen subject! who pays for theses correspondence courses we do the tax payer! also within the convicts incarceration he is given medical care 3 hot meals a day who pays for this? yes your right we do. I wish Britain had the back bone of some of Americas states that practise capital punishment.

In conclusion I feel we have enough modern techniques of detection to be sure of some ones guilt, once sure we should exercise capital punishment, the money we would save in medical bills food and education for criminals can be used to keep our streets safer and allow law abiding citizens to go about their daily lives.

Excellent article – I totally agree with your points of view. Teenagers/criminals no longer have any respect or value of a persons life – they do not seem to comprehend or care if they hurt or even kill someone. If the laws were tougher, and punishment for murder was the death sentence – it might make them think twice before committing such crimes.
