Thesis Paper on The Current Involvment of The American Government with The United Nations

Thesis paper I had to do for government class. I got a 95 but you can use this for reference. I included the bibliography but it’s only websites not the actual articles. This should help anyone who is writing about the U.N. and the U.S.

What is the current involvement of the American government with the United Nations?

The United Nations was started on the 1st of January 1942 during World War 2. The name was actually thought up by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was created when representatives of 26 nations came together and decided to continue fighting the Axis Powers. The United States was one of those 26 nations and has been very involved with the United Nations every since.

In 1947 the United States Mission was made by an act of Congress to help the President and the Department of State in United States policy at the United Nations. The USUN has served a vital role as the Department of the State’s UN branch. Nowadays, the USUN has about 150 people working for it who represent the United States’ political, economic and social, legal, military, public diplomacy and management interests at the United Nations.

Currently our Ambassador to the United Nations is Susan Rice who was appointed on January 22, 2009. The Ambassador must be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Now, during the current Obama administration the position was made cabinet level while during the Bush administration it was not.

One of the major human rights issues is the situation in Darfur. In 2003 during March fighting breaks out in Darfur region of western Sudan between the Government and rebels. The rebels consisted of the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). About a month later refugees being pouring into eastern Chad to escape.

After open warfare erupted in Darfur peace agreements were made with the help of the United States to end the twenty year old war. Militia attacks and a government offensive have led to enormous displacement of civilians. Starvation is rampart. People are still being killed. So far 400,000 have been reported dead by UN reports.

The UN recently had a food aid convoy cross the Sahara and get to eastern Chad successfully. Otherwise the only other recent things they have done are mostly just having peace talks and trying to provide food to people. The UN claims the operations in Sudan are grossly underfunded.

In 2009 Obama said his Administration was working on a strategy to confront the situation in Sudan. Lately, however the killings continue but Darfur seems to have been forgotten by Obama who had been one of the leaders on the Darfur issue when he was in the Senate.
