Thesis Paper on The Current Involvment of The American Government with The United Nations
Thesis paper I had to do for government class. I got a 95 but you can use this for reference. I included the bibliography but it’s only websites not the actual articles. This should help anyone who is writing about the U.N. and the U.S.
The UN also says in a Darfur update it is really not getting any better. Due to approximately 40% of all aid workers in Darfur 1.5 million people will no longer have access to nutrition and health services. The Sudanese Government claims it can provide all the necessary essential services but the UN’s top humanitarian official says “The [Sudanese] government does not have the capacity to replace all the activities that have been going on, certainly not on any short- or medium-term basis.”
The United Nations Security Council is one of the principal Councils of the United Nations. The duty of the UNSC is to keep peace, establish international sanctions and has the authorization of military action. There are 15 members of the Security Council. !0 are elected non-permanent members who have two year terms. The other five are permanent members who are able to veto. The United States is a permanent member along with China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
The Security Council makes resolutions on current affairs such as the peace and security in Africa, the situation concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the situation concerning Iraq. Recently the UN Security Council at a meeting urged to end violence against women and highlights women’s vital role in peace processes.
In a statement by John F. Sammis he discusses Agenda Item 66: “Elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance. He believes the United Nations must continue to focus on race and racism and the United States will work everyone to build better resolve to stop racism and racial discrimination wherever it occurs.
The United States is also involved with UN in trying to end hunger worldwide. In a statement by Ambassador Susan E. Rice on World Food Day she called to attention the urgency for comprehensive, sustainable action on global food security. At the MDG Summit the United States and Ireland jump started the UN’s Scaling Up Nutrition framework which is a strategy endorsed by 100 national partners to battle undernourishment.
One important area of policy that the U.S. has is human rights. The USA was voted off the UN Human Rights Commission because of alleged disproportionate criticism of Israel and membership that included repressive regimes. In May 2009 The United States won their UN Human Rights Council seat back.
Obama unveiled his Development Policy at a UN MDG Meeting in September of 2010. He brought the global development policy to this year’s summit. The new policy outlines a “new approach and new thinking that will guide our overall development efforts.” The policy is based on four ideas: a new definition of development, a new view on the ultimate goal of development, a focus on broad-based economic growth, and a renewed call for mutual accountability. Also, the U.S. will start creating situations where aid isn’t need anymore.
The Obama administration admitted to the United Nations that America’s human rights record isn’t too good. But they have stressed that the U.S. political system has protections that will make it better. He explained that some Americans, mostly minorities are still discriminated against. It was also decided that the U.S. should run for a seat back on the Human Rights Council.
The United States has been involved with the United Nations from the very beginning. They are members of prominent groups in the UN such as the Human Rights Council and the Security Council. They have been involved in Darfur along with the United Nations. There have been criticisms of their involvement with the UN as the failure of the United State’s to pay their dues has ensured the UN’s inability to carry out its responsibilities. All in all with the Obama Administration’s policy on the UN it will probably get better.
