Tobacco: A New Regulation to Protect Young Men

Since 2008, smoking among youth is increasing again. A circular from the Ministry of Health, signed in conjunction with the Ministry of the Interior, proposes a set of measures to reduce youth access to tobacco for youth. Great news, knowing that the daily consumption of tobacco is installed between 13 and 17.

The fight against tobacco continue targeting young people

The key measure of the circular is “to protect young people by reducing access to tobacco.” On the agenda: banning sales to minors, creation of protected areas around schools such as the sale of tobacco will not be allowed, and disappearance of products that promote smoking initiation (including flavored cigarettes).

The Government also intends to strengthen the mobilization against smuggling and show more firmness against all forms of tobacco smuggling.

Finally, intensify checks on compliance in non-smoking areas, is needed.

Tobacco, the leading cause of preventable death

The challenge is enormous: with 60,000 deaths annually, tobacco is still the leading cause of preventable death. And a third of the population smokes, France is one of the European countries with the most smokers. We are far from the 20% target set by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is therefore imperative that the fight against tobacco continues, particularly targeting young people.
