Toll Free Call: The New Harassment of The 21st Century
Are you plagued with toll free calls even though you are registered on the Do Not call Registry? Do you find it a nuance when you look down at your caller ID you see who is calling to see the words TOLL FREE CALL instead of seeing a real identification instead of who is calling?

According to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) on www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/tollfree.html
‘Toll-free numbers are numbers that begin with one of the following three-digit codes: 800, 888, 877, or 866. Toll-free numbers allow callers to reach businesses and/or individuals without being charged for the call. The charge for using a toll-free number is paid by the called party (the toll-free subscriber) instead of the calling party. Toll-free numbers can be dialed directly to your business or personal telephone line.
Toll-free numbers are very common and have proven successful for businesses, particularly in the areas of customer service and telemarketing. Toll-free service provides potential customers and others with a “free” and convenient way to contact businesses.

Above is a search I found on one of those 1-800-callers who will not stop calling me even though I choose to not pick up the phone.
Toll-free numbers are also increasingly popular for personal use. For example, parents can obtain toll-free numbers to give to a young adult who is away at college, allowing that young adult to call home anytime without having to make a collect call or pay for the call.”
The thing that is bothersome about such phone calls is that they used to be marked as unknowns and you could request that the phone company block such phone calls from coming through on your phone. To stop these calls from being blocked by phone services these companies instead had the caller id changed to “TOLL FREE CALL” to prevent the blocking.
Many people save time and only pick up the phone when the caller id information states the company calling. I personally reject any phone call from TOLL FREE CALL. Who wants to pick up a phone call from an unidentified caller?
In the Consumer Facts on the FCC site it also says
“Caller Identification (ID)
If you have caller ID, a telemarketer is required to transmit or display its phone number and, if available, its name or the name and phone number of the company for which it is selling products. The display must include a phone number that you can call during regular business hours to ask that the company no longer call you. This rule applies even if you have an EBR with the company, and even if you have not registered your home phone number(s) on the national Do-Not-Call list. Before these rules took effect, the words “private,” “out of area,” or “unavailable” might have appeared on the Caller ID display. “
Take note of the area, which I underlined
” a telemarketer is required to transmit or display its phone number and, if available, its name or the name and phone number of the company for which it is selling products.”
The caller ID TOLL FREE CALL with the phone number does not express to me the company for which it is selling products
TOLL FREE CALL = Unknown
Companies call people from three to twenty times or more at least until they get an answer on the telephone from the person they are trying to call. If they like me are not willing to pick up the phone, when is enough is enough?
