Two Afghan Shiite Shrine Bombed, 34 Killed

Perpetrators blew himself up in the middle of the day of Ashura celebration attended by hundreds of Shiites.

The explosion occurred at two Shiite shrines in Afghanistan as hundreds of pilgrims attended the celebration of Ashura, Tuesday, December 6, 2011. As a result of the blast, at least 34 people were reported killed and 67 others injured.

Reporting from Al Jazeera, the first explosion occurred in the Shiite shrine in the capital Kabul, killing 30 people. According to eyewitnesses, the blast from a suicide bomb that exploded at the gate of the temple on Tuesday morning.

The second blast occurred in the Shiite shrine city of Mazar-i-Sharif, killing four people. The bomb was taken using a bicycle blew himself up at the perpetrators and between Shiite shrines and mosques.

There is not any militant group which claims to have committed the attack. The death toll was expected to increase because of the many wounded who were in critical condition.

Ashura is a national holiday in Afghanistan. On this day, the followers of Shia doing celebrations commemorate the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein, at the battle of Karbala in the year 680.

Earlier in the Taliban government, Shiite celebrations of this kind is prohibited by the government. However, since the Taliban collapsed, groups of Shiite got wind. They began to build the temple and hoist flags Shiites in Afghanistan.
