U.s. Immigration Policy: Where Do You Stand?
The current U.S. Immigration policy is being strictly inforced at our border crossings. The policing of these borders are to prevent further immigration into a country that is known for its culturally rich people.
As more and more people of different races and cultures enter the United States and the ethnic composition of the country changes, immigration becomes a more intensely debated issue. Some Americans favor tighter immigration restrictions and argue that immigrants take jobs away from U. S. citizens, drain social services, and resist learning the English language. Others, however, point to America’s historic commitment to immigration and believe that immigrants keep the nation strong, economically competitive, and culturally rich. The question of where America’s doors should be open or closed, guarded 24/7, will continue to be intensely debated in the courts, in Congress, and in communities where immigrants settle.
The United States is chiefly made up of immigrants from other lands. Americans are an amalgam of multiple races, religions, nationalities, and ethnicities. Early settlers came to the United States to find a better way of life. This idea still holds true today. Where else can an immigrant make a better life for themselves. Its only here in the United States that holds great opportunity. Here is a good example of a family who immigrated from Poland to the United States on a ship, as so many do from a foreign land.
The ship’s passengers boarded the boat scared and worried not knowing how their life would be in a new land. These were new pioneers from a country ravaged by a war induced by a cruel leader named Adolf Hitler. Everywhere country he stepped into he destroyed. Thousands of men, women, and children were slaughtered. He had no empathy for human kindness, nor any compassion. He was an enraged dictator.
The family that boarded the ship were made up of a father, a mother, a son, and a daughter. Certainly they were scared and mostly hungry. Who knew what was to become of them? They left their family behind to escape the destruction of war. Never to see the family. The father was a well-built man. Not extremely educated. His wife was a brave and courageous woman with many talents as a seamstress. The son was hers from a previous marriage. And the daughter was theirs. The children, however, were completely puzzled as to where they were going and what lied ahead for them. For the story’s sake we will give the father a name of Stephen; the mother, Maria; the son, Michael; and the daughter, Mary.
