Unesco: 28 Million Children Deprived of Education Because of Armed Conflicts

Twenty-eight million children were deprived of education in 2008 due to armed conflict that expose the sexual violence and attacks on schools, UNESCO said in a report released Tuesday, cited by AFP.

Of the 67 million children attending primary school age but not enrolled, 42%, meaning 28 million, live in poor countries affected by conflict, explains the report, entitled “The Hidden Crisis: armed conflict and education. “

One of the main problems is that “parties to the conflict deliberately attacking children and schools” only in Afghanistan in 2009 was recorded at least 613 such attacks, said director Kevin Watkins.

UNESCO questioning the humanitarian system, criticizing that “passes children”in these countries. Less than 2% of education aid is affected, “which is not allowed to answer only a tiny number of aid applications for this sector, “said Watkins.

UNESCO proposed to create an international commission on sexual violence, supported by the International Criminal Court (ICC), and improvement of humanitarian aid, especially through the development funds.
