United States Debt, Where Do We Draw The Line?

The US’s debt has recently reached 14 Trillion dollars and is still climbing. The question is when to stop.

The United States Debt counter (http://www.usdebtclock.org/) says the National Debt is at almost 14 and a half TRILLION dollars. This issue has been talked about by 99% of the people in the US, but that’s all that’s ever come of it. Talk. My question is when will action actually come. And when can we stop “spending money to make money”? because that is plainly not working at all. At this date (12 July 2011) every single American citizen would need to pay about $45,000 to almost get rid of the National debt. However that’s more than the average annual income (as of 2009, http://www.ssa.gov/oact/cola/AWI.html). Is it possible to pay off such an enormous debt ever? I honestly don’t think so. Not peacefully at least.

So when will the countries we borrowed from come asking for there money back? Its really only a matter of time. Soon China is going to want their money, but you see, we don’t have any money! Then its going to turn nasty. I predict China asks first and eventually launches war against America. Then other countries who we owe debt to will start to do the same and at that point we’re looking at a third World War. Only this one will be the worst. The outcome? America will own half the world or America will be extinct. I don’t think there will be an “in between”

The only solution is immediate action by our “friends” on Capitol Hill. Yet, this is still extremely difficult. What can you cut? Education, they’re trying to and schools are already getting worse and drop out rates at record highs (http://www.edequality.org/facts/entry/drop_out_rate/) that’s definitely a bad idea. They could cut infrastructure, but then we would look like a third world country after 2-5 years. The most logical and friendly thing to cut would be OIL. There is about $604 Billion imported in oil each year if we were to completely cut oil (and thats not going to happen, but if we were) it would only take 25 years to pay the debt back assuming we don’t spend ANY more money than we have in that quarter of a century. Unfortunately cutting oil from America is impossible, but it would be a good start to only use our oil and promote other ways of getting energy. Let’s all hope that the American government can figure this thing out. And I mean everyone from Americans to Australians to South Africans to Germans. Because I like not being forced to hold a rifle in my hand before I plan on it. I also like the world at peace not in turmoil.  Like and Comment if you like this and still comment if you didn’t like it or you have suggestions to make it better. Thank you for reading!

Very interesting post i have been fascianated in this for a while, hopefully our goverment will not let us down on a default even though i do not agree with rising the debt ceiling a default would be horrible, oil company’s could get rid of the us dollar and make the gas prices go from 3 dollars to 8 dollars or somewhere along that line. I really hope the us goverment does not let us down because our economy was starting to get better but if a default comes we start all over again no a 2008 reccesion a 1930 type of GREAT depression.

Well researched article. I have to say, though, the problem goes back to the fact that our National Government doesn’t have to balance it’s budget every year, it just has to approve it. State governments, at least in Tennessee, cannot continue to function into the next fiscal year unless the budget is balanced. We wonder how the debt got so big, well it’s because the Executive and Legislative Branches of our government spend so much time getting people what they want, i.e. Republicans want tax cuts and Democrats want social programs, so they can win votes that they never stop to ask how will we pay for it. I’m no Republican, but that is one point they make that does make sense. I’m sorry, people are going to suffer, but we simply cannot continue without some sort of balanced budget law keeping these vote mongering, baby kissing, smiley glad handed narcissists in check.

A well written article on a subject of utmost importance. I sincerely hope an answer will be found soon. I think that taxes must rise even though no one wants it. How about cutting back on the military?

we could definitely cut back on military if we didn’t try to police the world. I don’t know why we must, No one else does it to the extent we do, its a bit out of control I think.

I could be wrong, but think it starts with us, that is right folks, you and me and our family and friends. Stop using that credit card, for those who have jobs, start relying on them less. Maybe instead of voting for the most eloquent speaker, the cutest candidate, or the one with the most monetary input, put the least likely candidate in the assembly, governor, representative, senate, congress and even the white house. So far history has proven that best at everything, cost the country money, while they live in the biggest and the best, our kids are suffering. The teachers with experience do not want to be there. They do not have time to teach manners while teaching the basic A,B,C’s. and 1, 2, 3’s. I do not know how much is genuine ADD and how much of it is due to getting what they want when they throw the tantrum. People are afraid of disciplining their children for fear of child abuse charges. Are there really that many children being abused? Some cases are so often repeated that if one is not paying attention, one will hear 5 cases 1 time instead of 1 case played over again times 5. Are the midnight basketball sessions really necessary in the inner cities? Probably, with the many 24 hour businesses, it is probably difficult to sleep at midnight, especially if mom and/or dad has to work the late night shift.

I love your article. I always like to hear the different views on this. It is scary to me. I do not know what will happen, but most realistic to me would be the war with China, and I do not believe United States would have a chance in this. I believe that is what it will come to in the end, and that will be the end.

The war situation looks a bit farfetched to me, man. I agree with you on the rest though – it is about time Americans began taking action, rather than just sitting back and discussing it. It is unfair to leave the next generation with the tremendous burden of our ever increasing debt.
