Who Is at Risk for Hunger and Malnutrition?
No matter what country they live in, poor people are most likely to suffer from hunger and malnutrition. Malnutrition affects people of every age, although infants, children, and adolescents may suffer the most because many nutrients are critical for growth. Alcohol can interfere with nutrient absorption, so alcoholics may not benefit from the vitamins and minerals they consume. People who abuse drugs may also be malnourished or underweight because they don’t eat properly. Someone with anorexia, bulimia, or another eating disorder may also be at risk of malnutrition. If you’re on a special diet, you need to be careful about eating balanced meals and a variety of foods to get the right nutrients.
What Happens to Someone Who Is Malnourished?
Malnutrition harms people both physically and mentally. The more malnourished someone is, the more likely it is that person will have physical problems. Poorly nourished children often have weakened immune systems, thus increasing their chances of illness. Underweight, malnourished teenagers (such as those with an eating disorder) have an increased risk of osteoporosis and may not have menstrual periods. They may have heart and other organ problems with severe malnutrition. Malnutrition, if left untreated, can lead to physical or mental disability, or even death. Children who are overweight have an increased risk for long-term conditions and diseases, including cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. Health consequences range from a higher risk of premature death to chronic conditions that reduce a person’s quality of life.
Impact of Economic Crisis on Malnutrition
Malnutrition is caused by a host of interrelated factors such as health, physical, social, and economic. Food supply distributed and consumed by the populace has consequent impact on nutritional status. Indigent families are suffering from hunger which leads them to be malnourished. In order to compensate to this problem, production of alternatives to every type of meat including chicken, pork, fish and beef-style products have been utilized.
