Virginity Pledges Don’t Mean Much, According to a Recent Study
As many as one in eight teens in the United States may take a virginity pledge at some point, vowing to wait until they’re married before having sex. But do such pledges work? Are pledge takers more likely than other teens to delay sexual activity?
My article is about human sexuality because teens are less likely to hold on to their pledge by having sex after marriage. Pledge takers are as likely to have sex before marriage as other teens that are also religious. However, pledge takers are less likely than other religious or conservative teens to use condoms or birth control when they do start having sex. In 934 young adults, 289 of them kept their pledge and held on to their virginity before being married, but the other 645 teens did not hold on to their pledge. Teens and young adults who are less likely than their peers to protect themselves result in sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
