Volume One: Issue Three

A series of articles about the current issues of the day.

The current recession has lead to the new cliche of, “In these hard times.” It seems that it has become a phrase following everything from political campaigns to Walmart ads. The question I have is, what is meant by “hard times?” My grandparents grew up in the Great Depression, and that seemed like harder times than these, I wonder what they said “back then.”

Now I am not saying that people are not going through many troubles, and I do not want to belittle people’s problems, but playing into people’s self loathing may not be what we need either. It almost is becoming our reason for doing almost anything. Why didn’t people want to save money four years ago? The fact is that if we were to live in good time like the bad times then we could probably have alright times. Isn’t that good enough?

There is a lot of blame go around the moon and back, but that is as good as pointing the finger. I, for one, am tired of society. I’m just tired of people, being people. People got us all into this mess, so why shouldn’t people get us out. What I cannot forget is I am part of the people. I am part of the problem even if I don’t feel like it. So I guess I do have three fingers pointing right back at me.

As most people will tell you who have been in hard times before, it’s good for you, and I would have to agree with that. Living without makes one appreciate living with, or maybe that is just what people say to make the whole experience a little more bearable. Either way it has to be interesting to talk about hard times in America, since most of the world is poor and was poor and still will be poor long after the recession has ended and we all can laugh about it like the time when teenage Johnny got suspended from school.

I would just like to tell everyone to just relax. Most of the problems people have or perceive to have comes from people being uptight about every little thing. Relax! Relax about religion, relax about God (or god, for the atheists), relax about money, relax about justice, relax about what is fair, or who won, relax about relaxing. Everything will be alright.
